Project Organization - Security Team
The transition to SungardSCT Banner software requires a fresh look at security issues among data users at the University of Memphis. Recently, a committee formed to address some of these issues identified certain key areas of concern for information-sharing within the Data Warehouse. Many of these issues are also critical to data collected within the Banner software. The Spectrum Security Committee has been formed to address issues as follows: - Evaluate the impact that shared information (e.g., name and address tables) will have on release of financial, human resources, student, and advancement information, and make recommendations about employee access to information that appropriately balances federal, state, and University laws, rules, or guidelines with the employee’s ability to perform essential tasks. This activity should include examination of the “need to know” policy draft (attached).
- When sensitive data need to be protected, explore alternative ways to provide employees with necessary data.
- Identify specific criteria to aid data stewards when determining “need to know” (see draft definition and guidelines attached).
- Consider the types of training and devise training programs that will be needed to provide users with an understanding of the data accessed.
- Present recommendations to the Steering Committee for decision-making on levels of security within the Banner software and within the data warehouse.
